Was that evangelism? Strictly speaking. No it wasn’t, especially for the purist! I didn’t do any version of the ABC of salvation or tell her she needed Jesus in her life. In the moment that would have felt like hitting her over the head with a spiritual hammer and causing any spiritual growth to become stunted.
There was an opportunity to end the conversation on life coaching or the opportunity to say something about God filling that role in my life and trying to earth Christianity in her language and her world view of things.
To not say anything would for me be as disadvantaging for her as 'hitting her over the head’ with the gospel, both would stunt what might otherwise be a moment of growth. I know I'm pushing both examples to the extreme.
We have been praying during advent for open doors, open hearts and an open mouth. From next week we will be thinking about the words that come out of that open mouth.
